HEPES

For buffer solution preparation:

HEPES (or 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1-piperazine ethanesulfonic acid) is a zwitterionic organic compound commonly used as a buffer solution in biochemistry. It is part of the Good buffers. Since Good’s work in 1966, it has been widely preferred over bicarbonate buffer for cell culture due to better stability at physiological pH.

Unlike phosphate and bicarbonate buffers, the dissociation of HEPES in water decreases as the temperature decreases, making it advantageous for use as a buffer solution to maintain the structure and function of enzymes at low temperatures.
